Enjoy an afternoon hike and picnic with your family and friends. Everyone is invited! Camp Nelson is a historic Civil War-era freed slave refugee camp and military supply depot. Many African Americans found their freedom here. If you want time to enjoy the visitor center and museum, arrive early. More information can be found using the link below.
• 4:00 – 4:15 – Gather and meet behind the Visitor Center
• 4:15 – 5:15 – Hike the marked yellow trail on the map below
• 5:15 – 6:00 – Picnic Dinner with friends and family behind the Visitor Center near picnic tables
Hiking Description
The trail is an easy 2-mile loop counterclockwise. The path is mowed grass with rolling hills and can be walked by many different ages and abilities. There are multiple Points of Interest on this idyllic trail. It is a beautiful stroll through grassy fields, next to big trees and barns, and lots of nature.
What to Bring
• Good walking shoes
• Drinking water for the hike
• Blanket or chairs for Picnic (there are only a couple of tables)
• Food for Dinner
