Women’s Bible Study

Please join me on Thursday mornings this fall for a Women’s Bible study. We will study the book Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World by Joanna Weaver. This is a 12 week study that will begin on September 11th at 10:00 am.

You can purchase a book from Cokesbury or see me by August 15 and I will order them for the group. The cost is $14.00. One review states, “With her fresh approach to the familiar Bible story, Joanna Weaver shows how all of us- Marys and Marthas alike- can draw closer to our Lord: deepening our devotion, strengthening our service, and doing both with less stress and greater joy.” I look forward to taking this journey together as we explore the moments in which we know things must get done, however we want to sit at Jesus’ feet. Let’s find that balance in prayer, study and faith.

I hope you can join us!
Much joy, Holly

Children and Youth Baptism Class Begins September 7

For those interested in becoming a member and learning more about the church and your faith, this would be a great class to attend. This is a 6 week study during Sunday School which will include some of the following: Disciples History People of the Bible What is means to be a church member Baptism and Communion Confession of Faith At the end of our class, we will gather in the Historic Sanctuary after church for baptism on October 5.

I understand the church has a strong tradition of “Baptism Mentors.” This would be a great tradition to continue. The mentors will be there to help support and guide the young people in their faith. Our prayer is that the mentors will make this a commitment not only during these 6 weeks, but for life. I strongly believe that this class will have a very special bond as we grow closer to God and to each other. If you are interested, please contact Holly at gro.ccnrohhtuos@auquf.ylloh).

Special Project
for 225 days

The 225 committee is recommending that SECC members put aside 10 cents (or more) every day for the next 225 days as a special project of the celebration. The collected money will be added to the Historic Sanctuary fund. Actually, the countdown began on February 17th, so we will have to catch up for those days already gone. If it is not possible for you to participate in the l0 cents a day (or more) project, think of something you can do for 225 days to be a participant with us in this special project. Thanks in advance for your willingness to join the committee in this project.

The Sustainability Action Team - August 18, 7:00

The Sustainability Action Team met last Wednesday, August 6. In attendance were Dale Warren, Steve Feese, Becky Burklow, Suzanna Weisenfeld, Don Morgan, Debra Goad, and Mary Louis Phelps. We discussed many issues involving care for creation from practical, theological, biblical, and spiritual perspectives.

It is the common mission of this team to seek sustainable solutions for doing God's work at South Elkhorn as well as to provide information for church members to assist them in making changes in their personal lives. There are many specific projects that individuals on this team are working on, and we hope to present some of these to the Cabinet in upcoming months.

For the time being, we are instituting a coffee mug program to help us decrease our polystyrene (styrofoam) consumption. If you are interested in this endeavor, simply take a ceramic mug from the cart by the coffee pots and return it to the lower shelf when you are finished. Wait! That sounds too easy, but that is all that needs to be done. We have had a few individuals offer donations of mugs, and that is much appreciated. Members of the team have volunteered to wash the mugs at the conclusion of the service.

Our next meeting will occur Monday, August 18th at 7:00 p.m. If this team sounds like something you feel called to work on, please join us at our next meeting.

Peace,
Stephanie McCormick
